Making the Connection Digitally
Being an ICT company, the thrust of the MTN Foundation education agenda is a fundamental commitment to the effective application of information technology in education. The MTN Foundation is determined to invest in education such that the primary, secondary and tertiary levels of education are positively impacted.
The objectives of the Education Portfolio are as follows:
1. To empower through the provision of information and technology resources
2. To enable skills acquisition, transfer and development
3. To raise national literacy levels
4. To provide educational resources for effective learning
5. To enhance educational infrastructure development 

1. MTN Foundation UniversitiesConnect Project (in partnership with NetLibrary Nigeria Limited)
Description:
The project is designed to provide digital access to information and infrastructure to tertiary institutions in Nigeria. It aims to facilitate access to a collection of digital resources from different libraries to assist university students and lecturers with their research work.
Scope:

The project provided the following to each institution:
1. 128 networked computers, 3 servers, 2 high capacity printers and one 100 KVA generator
2. VSAT equipment and internet connectivity bandwidth with 2 years subscription
3. 2 years subscription to electronic resources through the NetLibrary network (Journals, Books, etc)
4. A conducive study environment through space renovation, provision of adequate lighting, furniture, and alternative power supply
5. Technical training for 12 members of existing library staff who will work with NetLibrary over the 2 years in management and maintenance of the library to build capacity
6. One-week library awareness (interactive session) to be held annually for students and lecturers
7. One-week awareness workshops to be held annually for approximately 600 students and 120 lecturers
8. Two years comprehensive insurance cover to take care of theft and fire
9. 5-year maintenance contract with the University to ensure the conducive environment is maintained under a clear strategy for sustainability

2. MTN Foundation SchoolsConnect Project (in partnership with SchoolNet Nigeria)
Description:The project is designed to enable teachers and students in Nigerian public secondary schools to gain confidence & understanding of how Information and Communication Technology can add value to their lives and learning.
Scope:
The project provided the following to each school:
1. 1 Server
2. 21 computers, fully networked
3. 30 KVA generator
4. Diesel supply for all the schools for 1 year
5. 4 of 1.5 HP air conditioners
6. Subject software to serve as teaching aids
7. A networkable printer
8. Multimedia projector and white board
9. Furniture to seat 42 students in the lab
10. VSAT equipment and internet connectivity bandwidth subscribed for 1-year
11. Teacher training at a selected location in the state for 6 teachers
12. Insurance cover for 1-year
13. Retainer fees for local technical company to maintain the facility for 1-year
Location:
Phase 1   - Lagos, Enugu and Kaduna states
Phase 2   - Abuja, Kwara and Rivers states
Phase 3   - Bauchi, Cross River and Ogun states, and also Kings College Lagos
Phase 4   - Ekiti, Niger and Imo states
Phase 5   - Bayelsa, Kano and Katsina states, and also Demonstration School for Deaf Children, Kaduna state

3. MTNF Child Friendly School Initiative (in partnership with UNICEF & RAVEGA)
Description:
This project is aimed at providing basic school infrastructure in primary schools to help improve quality of education.
Scope:
  • To up-grade the physical infrastructure & provision of essential furniture
  • To Provide/rehabilitate water & sanitation facilities in each school
  • To Provide basic teaching & learning materials
  • To Support training of communities, head teachers & staff and inspectors
Location:
Phase 1   - Delta, Bauchi & Lagos states

4. MTNF-JA Nigeria “Company Program” (in partnership with Junior Achievement Nigeria)
Description:
It is an initiative which enables students to learn how to set up a company by selling shares & other business related activities. The programme runs annually in the MTNF SchoolsConnect beneficiary schools for 30 selected SS 2 students.
Scope
The program provides students with the opportunity to:
  • Develop skills needed for working in small and large group situations
  • Apply thinking and decision-making processes through activities that call for analyzing and evaluating business and economic issues
  • Develop attitude and behaviour supportive of the market economic system
  • Develop an appreciation for the economic and personal value of staying in school and acquiring a diploma
Location:
The MTNF SchoolsConnect beneficiary schools in the followings states have benefitted from the project: Lagos, Kaduna, Kwara, Enugu, Rivers, Abuja, Cross River, Ogun and Bauchi states and also Kings College Lagos.

5. MTNF-MUSON Music Scholars Programme (in partnership with the Musical Society of Nigeria - MUSON)
Description:
The programme in conjunction with the Musical Society of Nigeria is targeted at students with a flair for music, and it provides them the opportunity to acquire qualitative music education leading to the MUSON Diploma in Music.
The sponsorship programme is aimed at providing scholarships to about 220 students over a five year period and a total of 74 students have graduated on the programme.
Scope:
The sponsorship support covers the following:
  • Tuition
  • Book allowance
  • Stipend (pocket allowance)

6. MTNF Science & Technology Scholarship Scheme (in partnership with After-School Graduate Development Centre (AGDC) & Joint Admissions & Matriculation Board (JAMB)
Description:
The Scholarship Scheme is aimed at providing academic scholarships annually to a minimum of 500 students on full-time studies in accredited tertiary institutions across the six geo-political zones in Nigeria.
Scope:
A minimum of 500 students on annual basis are to be awarded Scholarships of N200, 000.00 (Two hundred thousand Naira) each to cover tuition, book allowances and stipend for one academic year.
Under the first phase of the project, the MTNF Scholarship award was presented to 500 successful candidates in 2nd year of study in science & technology related disciplines across 44 Federal & State owned tertiary institutions.
A total of 253 medical students as well as 247 students from other science & technology related disciplines benefited from the scholarship award.
The top 5 beneficiary students by course of study are: Medicine (252); Electrical Engineering (50); Mechanical Engineering (44); Computer Science (39) & Electronics Engineering (23).

Across public tertiary institutions (universities, polytechnics and colleges of education) in the six geo-political zones in Nigeria.

7. MTN Foundation Learning Facility Supply Project
Description:
The primary objective of the project is to distribute desks, benches (to students), tables and chairs to teachers respectively in public secondary schools across the six geo-political zones in Nigeria.
Scope:
A total of 2,250 desks & benches for students and 325 tables & chairs for teachers have been distributed to 13 schools in 12 states. The states are: Lagos, Ondo, Ogun, Imo, Enugu, Abia, Anambra, Rivers, Kogi, Jos, Benue & Nassarawa.
Location:
Across public secondary schools in the six geo-political zones in Nigeria.

8. MTN Foundation Learning Support Materials Initiative
Description:
The main objective of the Learning Support Materials initiative is to distribute resource materials (branded exercise books; school bags; rain coats; pencil cases; magnetic learning puzzle maps, etc) to public primary & secondary & tertiary schools throughout the six geo-political zones in Nigeria.
Scope:
From January 2010 to September, 2010, a total of 9,935 exercise books, 7,185 school bags, 160 pencil cases & 40 blow-up toys have been distributed to 92 Primary & Secondary schools in Nigeria.
Location:
Across public primary, secondary and tertiary schools in the six geo-political zones in Nigeria.

9. MTNF Know Africa Books Initiative
Description/Scope/Location:
The objective of this initiative is to distribute the “Know Africa” collection, which comprises of three separate books; Africa Who’s who; Makers of Modern Africa and Africa Today; to public tertiary institutions (Federal & State Universities, Polytechnics & Colleges of Education) throughout the six geo-political zones in Nigeria.
The set of books contain very interesting and valuable information about people who have made their mark in Africa as well as other relevant information. This initiative further demonstrates MTNF commitment to complementing Government’s efforts by deploying resources to enhance the educational sector in Nigeria.
A total of 354 sets of the “Know Africa Books” (a set of 3 books) have been distributed to public Federal & State 56 Universities, 54 Polytechnics & 67 Colleges of Education (i.e. 177 institutions) across the six geo-political zones in Nigeria.

10. MTNF Science & Technology Laboratory Project
Description:
The project is designed to upgrade Science Laboratories for practical teaching of core science subjects (i.e. Chemistry, Physics & Biology) in selected state public secondary schools thus improving students’ learning and teachers’ teaching experience in the sciences.
