USA President Barack Obama: Nuclear test 'isolates North Korea further'

News on Top President Obama: "We will lead the world in taking firm action"
North Korea's actions will only isolate it further, US President Barack Obama has warned, hours after the UN Security Council unanimously condemned Pyongyang's nuclear test.
The US would lead "firm action" to counter the threat, the US president said in his State of the Union address.
The Security Council hours earlier called the test a clear threat to international security.
Monitors said the test appeared twice as big as the previous one in 2009.
The test took place at the Punggye-ri site in the north-east of the country on Tuesday morning.
Analysis There are fewer ways to impact the North Korean economy than, say, Iran's, but plenty of steps remain available to more seriously squeeze the North Korean leadership.
One option is a move like the 2007 sanctions against Banco Delta Asia, which froze $25 million (£15.9m) in laundered North Korean assets. That step got Pyongyang's undivided attention.
Throwing some sand into the gears of the Kim family business does not solve the larger problem, but at least it might arrest Pyongyang's swagger.
It remains to be seen whether Pyongyang's provocative course is the new normal or just part of the learning process for a young and untested leader.
Either way, if Kim Jong-un wants to play with the grown-ups, he has to understand there are real costs for going beyond the accepted boundaries.
To get him refocused on available carrots, it is time he experienced some heftier sticks.

Students barricaded the campus entrance and blocked staff from getting to work

South Africa's Fort Hare University has shut down its main campus following violent student protests over a 90% rise in residence fees. University officials said the intimidation of staff and the destruction of property had resulted in the campus' closure until next Tuesday.
Police fired rubber bullets to disperse students burning tyres on Monday.
Fort Hare was once a famous university, where African leaders such as Nelson Mandela and Robert Mugabe studied.

Twenty-one students were arrested for public violence and released on warning after Monday's protest at the university's campus in the town of Alice in Eastern Cape province.
Students barricaded the campus entrance and blocked staff from getting to work.
Mvuyo Tom, the university 's vice-chancellor, says they may be forced to close the 97-year-old institution if the violent protest continued.
The university obtained an interdict to stop students from further disrupting activities and vandalising property

Presidential reward for Nigeria Super Eagles

News on Top Nigeria's Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad have been rewarded with national honours, cash and land gifts presented by President Goodluck Jonathan.
The Super Eagles lifted the trophy in South Africa on Sunday after beating Burkina Faso 1-0 in the final.
Twenty two players received the honour of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) while coach Stephen Keshi was made Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) and his assistants and team captain Joseph Yobo became Officer of the Niger (OON).
In addition, each team member received a plot of land from the Nigerian government.
The president also announced a cash gift of 10m naira ($62,500) to Keshi and 5m naira ($31,250 ) to each of the players.
Speaking at the event, President Jonathan said: "We thank you for making us proud, we gathered here to

Zimbabwe have sets key election dates

News on Top Zimbabwe's Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai speaks,
"There will be a referendum in March," said Morgan Tsvangirai, hailing the new constitution as a major step toward democratic reform.
However rights groups have warned that Zimbabwe is behind on reforms that would allow credible elections, and the government itself has said it does not have enough money to hold them.
Officials from Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change and Mugabe's ZANU-PF told AFP that the referendum will be held on March 16,
"The date agreed to by the principals is the 16th," Mugabe spokesman George Charamba told AFP. "It's a firm date now and we are working towards that."
Zimbabweans will be asked to vote for a law that would set presidential term limits and abolish the head of state's immunity for the first time.
Mugabe and Tsvangirai have both endorsed the draft text.
The law would also set the stage for them to face off in a presidential election, which Tsvangirai revealed would be held in July in tandem with a legislative vote, although he gave no precise date.
A victory for the 88-year-old Mugabe would extend his 32 years in power, a reign that in the last decade has been marked by economic meltdown and serious rights violations.
Previous polls have been marred by deadly violence and allegations of vote-rigging by Mugabe's camp.
The deaths of 200 people in widely disputed 2008 elections brought international condemnation.

Damilola Adegbite - Why I left Tinsel

News on Top Over the past few years, Damilola Adegbite has become one of the most recognizable actresses in Africa.  She plays the role of ‘Thelma Duke’, the gorgeous actress in the day time soap, Tinsel on Africa Magic; a role which has seen her become a favourite of soap lovers. Damilola, who recently left the set of Tinsel to explore the film industry, during a courtesy visit to Vanguard, spoke on why she left the soap, life outside Tinsel, her relationship and more. Enjoy!

You left Tinsel. Why?
Well, it was… as much as people don’t believe me, it was a personal decision. I just wanted to experience more of the movie world. It really wasn’t an easy decision to make because Tinsel has been part of my life for a while and we are family. But the only thing constant is change; basically every human being should re-evaluate their lives more often and make decisions.
I wanted to experience film. I wanted to experience movie-making and that is what I am doing now. And, I am pleased with it.
Can you describe your experience on Tinsel? You were one of the first on Tinsel?
I will say I am one of the few that had it luckily. Tinsel is a very pretty platform. I didn’t have to deal with the exploitation that other actors go through for getting script and all that. I had a proper platform and it was a worthwhile experience and one I will always be grateful for. I enjoyed it while it lasted.
What is your relationship with Gbenro Ajibade?
Laughs.  We are ex-colleagues.  We are just friends.
For four years, you played Thelma in Tinsel. How did that role influence your life?
Definitely not negatively! Well, do you mean affecting my personal life or my career?
I mean both.
Well, personally, no. I learnt to detach myself from the characters of the roles that I play. Career wise, it gave

Still savouring his two historic Nations Cup as skipper and coach, Keshi added. “Let me enjoy this moment. Nigerians don’t want me to stay”, he emphasised
While in South during the competition Keshi was aware of plans to disengage him after the Nations Cup.
That was after the two draws in the group stage. “NFF officials boasted openly to Keshi about the expertise

Mba, said he hopes he has done enough to earn a dream move to Europe.

News on Top LAGOS (AFP) – Nigeria’s unlikely hero in the final of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, Sunday Mba, has said he hopes he has done enough to earn a dream move to Europe.
On Sunday in Johannesburg, the 24-year-old Warri Wolves forward scored the goal that ended Nigeria’s 19-year wait for a continental glory as they won their third Nations Cup trophy at the expense of Burkina Faso.
In the 1994 final in Tunisia, Emmanuel Amuneke came off the bench to fire two goals past Zambia and give the Super Eagles their second Nations Cup triumph after they first won the tournament on home soil in 1980.
Amuneke, who was then playing for top Egyptian side Zamalek, would subsequently move to Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon and eventually Barcelona.
“I hope I can also get a deal in Europe after what I achieved at the Nations Cup,” said the former Nigeria U17 star, who was also the match winner against star-studded Ivory Coast in the quarter-finals of the competition.
His exploits have already sparked off interest from top German Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen.
In 2008, he was close to teaming up with Spanish lower league side Elche, but the deal collapsed after his local club, Enugu Rangers, demanded too much money.
“A transfer abroad is the next step for his career after his decisive goals capped a very decent tournament for

Francis Duru, found God in Abuja

News on TFrancis Duru is by no means a new comer to the Nollywood industry; it is an industry he watched as it grew to become one of the biggest employers of labour in and around Nigeria. Even though Duru believes he was already famous for his arts before the advent of what is known today as Nollywood, he is concerned that it does seem that the same people who built up the industry are also inadvertently tearing it apart. He talks about the way forward for Nollywood, life in Abuja, his family and other sundry issues. Excerpts…
How is life in Abuja?
Well, Abuja is a beautiful place. It is a conference city; I always tell people the world comes to Abuja every day. As the Federal Capital Territory, it remains the billboard that showcases the excellence of the nation, geographically and administratively. Coming to Abuja was indeed a hard nut to crack, but today I thank God for that decision. One is not where one is supposed to be yet, but one is not where one used to be. The good thing about Abuja is that it has created a very serene environment where one can raise one’s family.
Abuja means a whole lot to my life. It was here that I found God and gave my life to Christ. And that has been very fundamental. Beyond that, Abuja has built me into one of the finest masters of ceremony in this town. I am so sorry to be a little bit immodest, but once in a while, it is good to blow one’s trumpet. My being in Abuja created that opportunity for me.  My being in Abuja also gave me the opportunity to have a flip-over into consultancy and some other things. At the end of the day, it is worthwhile because it has added
