News on Top Celtic manager Neil Lennon shows strain of losing to St Mirren as he lets rip at Murdo MacLeod and Kenny Shiels

It was Celtic’s surprise defeat by St Mirren in the semi-finals of the Scottish Communities League Cup which prompted MacLeod to make the remarks which appeared under his name in a Scottish tabloid and, although Lennon did not name the pundit directly, there was no mistaking who the manager meant when he said: “Supporters can have their say, but I am not overly enamoured with columnists and their “yada yada yada” - having a go at the team.
“They seem to come out of their shell when we to lose a game, with the usual sycophantic lines like, ‘we feel sorry for the fans who have spent their hard-earned cash, blah blah blah’. They don’t really care about the fans who have spent their hard-earned cash at all.
“I am not going to name names. His opening line was to ‘lose one treble is careless, to lose two is whatever.’ It was as if winning a treble is as easy as shelling peas.
“I am not happy with it. He is trying to drive a wedge between the players and the fans with that comment about the hard-earned cash — I think this team has given value for money this season for the supporters.
"And they have done for the last couple of years — they have been by far the most entertaining team.

South Africa’s richest black man gives $1.3 billion, half his wealth, to the poor.

News on Top South Africa’s richest black man, Patrice Motsepe, has announced he is giving away half his wealth to improve the lives of the poor.
The mining magnate said the money would be handled by the Motsepe Foundation to address education and health issues.
He said he was inspired by the word’s two wealthiest men, Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, who are encouraging billionaires to donate to charity.
Mr Motsepe has a net worth of $2.65bn (£1.67bn), Forbes’ rich list estimates.
‘Part of our culture’
Born in the Soweto township, he is a lawyer by training and South Africa’s first and only black billionaire.
He founded the publicly traded mining conglomerate, African Rainbow Minerals, which has interests in platinum, gold, coal and other minerals.
He made most of his mining fortune through the government’s black economic empowerment policy, which mandates that mining companies be at least 26% black-owned, says the BBC’s Pumza Fihlani in

Zimbabwe has $217 in the bank, says finance minister "Tendai Biti "

Zimbabwe's public account balance after paying its workers' salaries last week now stands at just $217, Finance minister Tendai Biti has revealed.
"Government finances are in a paralytic state - last week there was only $217 left in government coffers when we paid civil servants,” he told journalists in Harare Wednesday .
Mr Biti said that President Robert Mugabe had since ordered him to approach international donors to fund forthcoming elections and a referendum on a new constitution.
"President Robert Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai have written to my ministry and the ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs to ask us to raise money for elections."
The southern African country needs about $85 million to hold the referendum set for sometime in March.
Another $107 million would be needed to organise general elections expected around June to end a fragile unity government.

"They arrived late last night and they deployed in four planes and some helicopters," said Haminy Belco Maiga, president of the regional assembly of Kidal.

The return Of Kalu to PDP ’ll energise Abia politics –Chief Okey Nwagbara

Chief Okey Nwagbara is a chieftain of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) from Abia State. He has never failed to voice out his dislike for what has been happening in his party in the state of recent and by extension the nation.
In this interview with OKEY SAMPSON, he spoke about the recent visit of the Minister of Information and Orientation to Abia and the controversial high rating of the state in the development index of the country.  He also spoke about the re-entry of the former governor, Orji Uzor Kalu (OUK), into PDP and many more.
Excerpts:
Recently, the Minister of Information and Orientation visited Abia and rated the State Government high in infrastructural development and good governance, what’s your reaction?
I was actually astonished to see a man as experienced, as intelligent and as exposed as Labran Maku, coming to praise what was shown to him, not what was done. One of the embarrassing aspects of that tour was the appearance of traditional rulers, waiting for the minister at every point he stopped, to welcome him. That made me to contemplate surrendering my chieftaincy certificate to the Eze that gave me the traditional title because I realised that the values of traditional institution in my Ngwaland in particular has been reduced to nothing. That will not happen in any other part of the country.
That apart, the minister’s visit was supposed to be pure dividends of democracy visit, it was not supposed to be with consent of the state government.  These are some of the areas I fault my party, PDP most times. When you want to checkmate the activities of elected officers, that visit, as I said, shouldn’t have been with the consent of the state government so that they would not hijack it. He should have been taken to places like Port Harcourt Road, from Port Harcourt Road to where Uratta Road ends, Omuma, Osusu,

2015 Presidential Election: Nobody Will stop Jonathan from contesting-Chief Edwin Clark,

The leader of the Ijaw nation, Chief Edwin Clark, yesterday, in Enugu where the Southern Nigeria Peoples Assembly was meeting declared that no individual or group can stop President Jonathan from contesting the 2015 presidential election. Clark, who fielded questions from newsmen insisted that the meeting had nothing to do with the 2015 elections but expressed his personal view that nobody, not even the North, could prevent Jonathan from running in 2015.
This is coming just as most speakers at the conference spoke in favour of a national conference where issues of concern from various groups could be discussed. Leader of the Yoruba delegation, Rt. Rev. Emmanuel Gbonigi, opened the call for a national conference when in an opening remark he said, “if it is acceptable to dialogue with Boko Haram why can’t we have a dialogue that embraces all Nigerians once

Pension fund fraud N23.3bn: Outrage trails court judgement

News on Top yesterday as reactions poured in from different quarters on the two years jail term handed a director in the pension office, John Yakubu Yusuf, after pleading guilty to a three-count charge of stealing N23.3 billion pension fund. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Senior Staff Association of Teaching Hospitals, Research Institutes and Allied Institution (SSAUTHRIAI) kicked against the judgment, describing it as an encouragement of corruption.
Founder, Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), Dr. Fredrick Fasehun and National Coordinator, Committee for Democracy and Rights of the People (CDRP), Mr. Amitolu Shittu, also described the judgment as a pointer to the endemic corruption bedevilling the nation’s judiciary. Both NLC and CDRP called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) not only to appeal the judgment but to beam its searchlights on the judiciary and fish out the corrupt ones for prosecution.
An Abuja High Court presided over by Justice Abubakar Talba had sentenced Yusuf to two years

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Re-arrests convicted pension director Faces another N300m fraud charges today.

News on Top Twenty fours after escaping jail, the former director of pension in the Police Affairs Ministry, Abuja, Mr. John Yakubu Yusufu has been re-arrested by the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on fraud related matters. He would be arraigned in a Federal High Court today on a fresh N300 million fraud charges by the anti-graft agency.
Daily Sun learnt that the embattled Yusufu who was jailed two years on Monday by an Abuja High Court judge, Justice Abubakar Talba over his roles in the N23.3 billion police pension fund was picked up by the anti-graft agency the same day upon his arrival at his residence. EFCC sources said yesterday in Abuja that the joy of the family of the convicted director upon the option of fine granted him by Mr. Justice Abubakar Talba was short- lived as EFCC operatives whisked him away and detained him at their Tunde Idiagbon House in Abuja.
By yesterday, the EFCC legal team confirmed at the Federal High Court premises that the convict was re-arrested on Monday in connection with another fraud. It was gathered that a four-count criminal charge had already been filed against him preparatory for his arrangement in a Federal High Court today. The convicted former director was accused of false declaration of assets contrary to Section 27(3) of

News on Top Boko Haram Declares Cease-fire

The Jama’atul Ahalis Sunna Lida’awati Wal Jihad, otherwise known as Boko Haram Islamic sect has agreed to cease fire for peace to prevail. This is coming after the group terrorized Nigerians, mostly in Northern states for three years, killing hundreds of people in their violent attacks.
According to Premium Times, one Abu Mohamed Abdulazeez who claims to be the second in command in the sect’s leadership hierarchy spoke to journalists in Maiduguri on behalf of the overall leader of the sect, Abubakar Shekau, saying that they decided to end the crisis because they had come to a realization that Muslims suffer from the attacks and wanted Muslims to live peacefully. He said the announcement of the ceasefire followed a series of meetings it held with the government of Borno State where it got commitments from the government that its members in captivity will be released.
Although he agreed that there were factions within  the group, he said the supreme power to order  a ceasefire rested with the leadership of Imam Abubakar Shekau, who is the leader of the authentic group.
The statement made available to Punch reads:

News on Top "Iran sends monkey into space"

Iran said on Monday it had launched a live monkey into space, seeking to show off missile delivery systems that are alarming the West which fears the technology could be used to deliver a nuclear warhead, Reuters reports.
The Defence Ministry announced the launch as world powers sought to agree a date and venue with Iran for resuming talks to resolve a standoff with the West over Tehran’s nuclear programme before it degenerates into a new Middle East war.
Efforts to nail down a new meeting have failed repeatedly and the powers fear Iran is exploiting the diplomatic vacuum to hone the means to produce nuclear weapons.
The Islamic Republic denies seeking weapons capability and says it seeks only electricity from its uranium enrichment so it can export more of its considerable oil wealth.

The powers have proposed new talks in February, a spokesman for the European Union’s foreign policy chief said on Monday, hours after Russia urged all concerned to “stop behaving like children” and commit to a meeting.
Iran earlier in the day denied media reports of a major explosion at one of its most sensitive,

Vincent Enyeama and Moses is the saviour as Super Eagles book confrontation with Cote d'Ivoire "Nigeria 2-0 Ethiopia"

News on Top Nigeria's Super Eagles finally booked their Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final place with a 2-0 victory against the Walya Antelopes of Ethiopia on Tuesday in Rustenburg. Victor Moses was the hero of the day as he won and converted the two penalties that won the game. The kickoff was taken by the white-clad Super Eagles and they swooped on the Ethiopians, who appeared cagey in the opening minutes. Efe Ambrose had the chance to repeat his Liberia heroics, but his header went wide. Another chance came soon after that with Victor Moses’ free kick deflecting into the hands of the Ethiopian goalkeeper. Ikechukwu Uche went through on goal in the fourth minute but keeper Sisay made a diving stop at the feet of the striker. Ethiopia showed their first intent in the 15th minute when star striker Said Saluhdin headed wide. The Ethiopians were playing the classic counter attack, leaving the midfield to the Eagles. The Walya Antelopes had the better of corner kicks in the first half with four, but could not make any count. In the 24th minute, a good passing move from the Eagles saw Uche pass to Elderson Echiejile,

Children and Youth with Special Health Care

A significant number of America’s children have special health care needs. These children suffer
from chronic conditions and require more health care services than other children (for example,
more doctor visits, specialized treatments, prescription drugs, and mental health services). Many
of them are underinsured or have no health coverage at all, which may mean that their additional
needs pose an extreme economic burden for their families and a sizable barrier to their healthy
development.
Who Are Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs?
Children with special health care needs are defined as children “who have or are at increased
risk for a chronic physical, developmental, behavioral, or emotional condition and who also
require health and related services of a type or amount beyond that required by children
generally.”1 One in five households with children in the United States includes at least one
child with special health care needs.2 Nationwide, more than 13.5 million children—18.5
percent of all children under the age of 18—have special health care needs.3
Children with special health care needs have a wide range of chronic illnesses, disabilities,
or emotional or behavioral health problems, such as severe asthma, autism, ADHD, cerebral

Egypt's army Forces chief General Abdul Fatha al_Sisi warns of 'state collapse' amid crisis

Egypt's army has been deployed to cities along the Suez Canal where the violence has been at its worst
Egypt Army soldiers in Suez on 28/1/13Egypt's armed forces chief has warned the current political crisis "could lead to a collapse of the state".
General Abdul Fattah al-Sisi, in comments posted on the military's Facebook page, said such a collapse could "threaten future generations".
He made his statement following a large military deployment in three cities along the Suez Canal where a state of emergency has been declared.
More than 50 people have died in days of protests and violence.
Overnight, thousands of people in Port Said, Ismailia and Suez - where some of the worst unrest has been - ignored a night-time curfew to take to the streets.
Gen Sisi's lengthy statement appears to be a veiled threat to protesters and opposition forces as well as an appeal for calm and an attempt to reassure Egyptians about the role of the military, the BBC's Yolande Knell in Cairo says.
Veiled threat "The continuing conflict between political forces and their differences concerning the management of the country could lead to a collapse of the state and threaten future generations," Gen Sisi, who is also Egypt's defence minister, said.

Chelsea wants Didier Drogba back

CHELSEA have made a sensational bid to re-sign Didier Drogba.
Owner Roman Abramovich made an embarrassing U-turn by sanctioning a move for the former Blues hero.
Drog, 34, was offered a six-month deal to the summer with a further one-year option for next season.
It was a blunt admission by Red Rom that his £50million golden boy Fernando Torres has flopped.
But Drogba turned down Rom’s offer and is set to join Turkish side Galatasaray today.
Drogba quit Chelsea for Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua in May after scoring the winning penalty in Blues’ Champions League final win over Bayern Munich.
He left after Blues offered him a one-year deal when he wanted two.
But the Ivory Coast striker failed to settle in China and has been looking for a move during the transfer

Becks joins Arsenal?

Arsenal have allowed David Beckham to train with them to maintain his fitness ahead of his next move, although Arsene Wenger has played down talk the former England captain could sign for the Gunners.
The midfielder, 37, has previously worked out with the Gunners during the MLS off-season, but now that he’s a free agent after leaving LA Galaxy, speculation mounted Wenger could have been tempted to offer the superstar a permanent deal.
Beckham has struck an agreement to train at Arsenal’s state-of-the-art London Colney HQ for the time being, and was at training on Wednesday morning.
Wenger has never hidden his admiration for Beckham’s attitude and work-rate, and with the Gunners in desperate need of galvanising, the former Manchester United man could be seen as the ideal signing to jump-start their season.

Balotelli’s £160,000 camouflaged Bentley is easily identifiable and a group of friends, all from the red half of the city, appear to have stumbled across the car while out in town.
It is some send-off for the young striker, who may finally be checking out of City this week after Italian giants AC Milan opened talks with the Barclays Premier League champions about a £24m move.
Balotelli was seen carrying some belongings from the club’s training ground on Monday before he joined his team-mates in London for the game against QPR at Loftus Road tonight.
Milan are understood to have offered £20m but City – who have also had vague contact from Juventus – are determined to stick to their valuation.
Milan are expected to make another bid for the Italy forward after their audacious last-minute move for

Police Arrested A father Through Daughter Who’s an Armed Robber

A17-year-old girl identified simply as Simi has exposed the hiding place of her robber father to the officials of the Special Anti Robbery Squad, Lagos State Police Command.
Her father, Ife, was the alleged leader of a 10-man robbery gang that killed four policemen in Ajah during a robbery operation two weeks ago.

THE PUNCH had reported on January 15, 2012 that the dead policemen were responding to a distress call when they were ambushed by the robbers.
Simi did not give her father up easily. She gave the information the police needed to arrest her father after a four-hour non-stop interrogation.

Blood test helped Doctor to identify patients, at Point of death

A simple, inexpensive blood test performed on trauma patients upon admission can help doctors easily identify patients at greatest risk of death, according to a new study by researchers at Intermountain Medical Center in Salt Lake City. The Intermountain Medical Center research study of more than 9,500 patients discovered that some trauma patients are up to 58 times more likely to die than others, regardless of the severity of their original injuries.
Researchers say the study findings provide important insight into the long-term prognosis of trauma patients, something not previously well understood.
“The results were very surprising,” said Sarah Majercik, MD, an Intermountain Medical Center surgeon and trauma researcher, whose team discovered that a tool developed at Intermountain Medical Center, called the Intermountain Risk Score, can predict mortality among trauma patients.

Scientists Search For An Improved Malaria Test

News on Top, The search for an improved malaria test has received a boost as scientists from the University of Abomey-Calavi, Benin have developed a method for detecting malaria parasites in mosquito vectors that could help yield better estimates of malaria transmission intensity in different settings.
In a study published in PLoS ONE,the new technique detects and identifies the four Plasmodium species in the principal mosquito vectors, Anopheles gambiae and Anopheles funestus. It also enables scientists to detect ‘mixed’ malaria infections where more than one type of Plasmodium parasite is present.
They maintained that the new malaria test is 98 per cent accurate.
Detects and identifies the four Plasmodium species, which could lead to better estimates of transmission intensity.

Widespread outbreaks of flu-like symptoms In U.S States

News on Top Thousands of people from nearly all 50 U.S states have continued to flood hospital emergency rooms in recent weeks due to widespread outbreaks of flu-like symptoms. And because many of these people have already been vaccinated for the flu this season, the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is basically having to admit that the flu shot is not nearly as effective as we have all been told it is – but be sure to get it anyway (they continually say).
As reported by CBS News, the most recent statistics show that at least 24 states and New York City are experiencing “high activity of influenza-like illness,” and another 16 states are reporting moderate activity, despite the warmer-than-normal winter in many places throughout the country. And since it is so

Doctors utilized marijuana as pain relief

News on Top A pair of scientists at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco has found that a compound derived from marijuana could stop metastasis in many kinds of aggressive cancer, potentially altering the fatality of the disease forever.
“It took us about 20 years of research to figure this out, but we are very excited,” said Pierre Desprez, one of the scientists behind the discovery. The finding, which has already undergone both laboratory and animal testing, and is awaiting permission for clinical trials in humans.
Desprez, a molecular biologist, spent decades studying ID-1, the gene that causes cancer to spread. Fellow researcher  Sean McAllister was studying the effects of Cannabidiol, or CBD, a non-toxic, non-psychoactive chemical compound found in the cannabis plant. Finally, the pair collaborated, combining CBD and cells containing high levels of ID-1 in a petri dish.
“What we found was that his Cannabidiol could essentially ‘turn off’ the ID-1,” Desprez told HuffPost. The cells stopped spreading and returned to normal.
